There is so much to do in and around the lakeside Village of Garrykennedy. There’s something for all tastes and activity levels.

Walks: Enjoy lakeside forest walks, mountain trails and stunning scenery right on your doorstep. Wonderful easy walks start 100 yards from the cottage. More challenging walks through the mountains are also available nearby.

Children’s Playground: Kids love the fenced playground area at Garrykennedy Harbor. This playground includes swings, slides, climbing bars etc. It’s a great place for visiting kids to meet local kids.

Bikes: Take a bike and explore the seldom-used back roads around Garrykennedy. Green tufts of grass mark the middle of the road like an ancient green ‘Mohawk’ haircut. Trees on both sides create a soft green canopy overhead. More challenging mountain bike options are also available if you prefer.

Fishing: Try your hand at fly fishing for trout (dapping) or trolling for the many large pike to be caught off Garrykennedy. Experienced local fishermen are available to guide you to the best fishing spots and to provide safe and enjoyable fishing lessons to young and old. Boats and fishing equipment are available to rent locally.

Golf: There are over 400 golf courses in Ireland and many of the best are within a short drive of Garrykennedy. Bring your clubs - or rent a set from the pro shop. Nearest 18 hole golf course is at Nenagh (6 miles from the cottage).

Horse Back Riding: Horse back riding is available locally for beginners and more experienced riders. Ireland has a rich history of horse racing and horse breeding and the locals will be glad to share that with you. The world's largest Thoroughbred stud, “Coolmore Stud”, has its main farm in County Tipperary.

Sailing: Sailing is great fun on Lough Derg. There’s 50 square miles of water at your doorstep in Garrykennedy. It’s more like an inland sea, than a lake. The third oldest yacht club in the world is in County Tipperary on Lough Derg just 15 minutes from the cottage. Sailboats are available to rent locally.

Excursions – Tour Boat: Take to the water on a 50 seater tour boat to explore the villages around the lake. Sit back and enjoy the trip. Let the Tour Boat Captain take care of all the logistics.

Shopping: Many of our guests enjoy Gift Shopping in County Tipperary. Skilled artisans work with local materials to produce unique gift items. Many of these items are only available in Ireland. If you’re looking for a unique gift item, you’ll have plenty to choose from in the towns near Garrykennedy. Some of our favorite items include jewelry, glazed pottery, crystal, tweed hats, tweed scarfs and tweed jackets, bog-oak carving, local cheese and preserves.

Swimming: There are no shortage of swimming locations in Ireland. There are great places to swim all around Lough Derg near Garrykennedy. Atlantic Ocean beaches are 60 miles away. Heated indoor swimming pools are 6 miles away.

Trace Your Irish Roots: Do you suspect you may have some Irish ancestors? Would you like to learn more about your Irish roots? A local office of the Irish Government genealogy service is available to help find your Irish roots. The office is located in the Heritage Center / Governor's House in Nenagh (6 miles from the cottage). They have online access to government, land registry, church and immigration records going back hundreds of years.
